Common questions
what is mapcraft?
Mapcraft is an iPhone maps app with a blocky, pixel-art look. It does everything you expect from a map — search, directions, saved places — but the map itself starts hidden under fog, and you reveal it by exploring the real world on foot.
how does the fog of war work?
The world is divided into square “chunks”. Everything begins covered by dark, unexplored fog. As you physically move around with the app open, your GPS position enters new chunks and permanently clears the fog there, revealing the real terrain underneath. Each newly revealed chunk earns XP and can uncover new biomes, places, and quests.
do I have to walk everywhere to use the map?
No. Search, directions, place details, and saving all work anywhere, right away — the map functions as a normal map. Only the fog reveal depends on real movement. If you just want plain navigation, you can turn the fog layer off in Settings.
what are XP, levels, and biomes?
You earn XP for revealing new chunks, discovering biomes, and visiting places. Banked XP raises your explorer level. Biomes are the terrain types you uncover — Plains, Forest, Highlands, Desert, Savanna, Jungle, and Tundra — and each one you reach for the first time is logged and rewarded.
what are quests?
Quests are achievements for explorers — milestones like revealing a run of new chunks, discovering a biome, or checking in at a place. You can see which are locked and unlocked in the quests screen.
how do resources and crafting work?
Resources spawn in the biomes around you. When you are close enough, you can collect them, and they go into your Chest. At the crafting bench you can combine resources into useful items — a torch, bread, a cartographer's scroll, and more.
is my location private? what data do you collect?
Mapcraft is private by design. There is no account, no analytics, and no ads. Your location is used only while the app is open, only to reveal the map, and it never leaves your device. Your revealed map, saved places, inventory, and progress are stored only on your iPhone. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.
how do I reset my exploration or progress?
Open Settings inside the app. There you can turn the fog off for plain navigation, or use the reset option to clear your revealed chunks and start with the map hidden again. Because everything is stored only on your device, deleting the app also erases all exploration, saved places, inventory, and settings.
how do I save a place or check in?
Open a place from search or by tapping the map, then save it to your Chest for quick access later. When you are physically close to a saved or searched place, you can check in to log that you have been there.
I reinstalled the app and my progress is gone — can you recover it?
Mapcraft stores everything on your device only, so deleting the app removes it. We keep no server-side copy and cannot recover exploration or saved places. This is the trade-off for keeping your map fully private.
how do I report a bug or request a feature?
